03. MA Project Proposal
The area of interest on wich I will be basing my project proposal
As a Postgraduate student, my hope is to specialize in typography, and to extend my theortical knowledge of the subject. My intention is to achieve a wider knowledge of graphics theory; specifically in the many ranges of typography, from their history (from initial basics and evolution) to the modern free hand styles. I would like to develop an in depth knowledge of the historical evolution of typography, concentrating on the revolution of type as an artistic form.
Previous relevant experience
I would like to undertake an MA, not only to gain a more advanced qualification, but also to achieve a deeper and more thorough knowledge of my selected subject This statement is very relevant in an area which over the last few years has developed such competition.
During my BA (Hons) programme, I had opportunity to explore areas of graphic design, web design, image making, and many other forms of visual communication, but the area which really fascinates me has always been typography; for its complexity, influence and appeal in modern society. Apart from being a means of communication, It can also be seen as a political, cultural and social statement which reflects the mood of the times of various societies.
My reason for applying for graphic design orginally was because I believed I would, whilst on my undergraduate programme, be able to use and mix as many different art forms as possible; from fine art to photography in order to conceive an original piece of graphic design as a final project. Then I started to develop a different interest, focused on the typefaces I was using in my work. I believe that type is fundamental to graphic design and that type, as an image, is also a form of expression which can be considered 'art'.
My decision to specialize in typography started to develop in the second year of the BA, but I chose to explore image as well as having a controlled and balanced knowledge of type. Both are importand, and both are difficult to put together in an aesthetic way. I developed my skills in relevant computer programmes, such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Quark X press, in order to use both the image and type together in a more professional and controlled way.
Type can be beautiful and complex art the same time. The challenge of perfection and fitness for purpose fascinates me more than simply working with image, which subseqently I find much more limiting than the creative utilisation of typography. I am interested now in the application of typography as image and to explore ways of manipulation, communication and readability, as well as to study typography as a context which reflects different societies and the ways in which different messages are understood by different cultures.

The ideas I wish to explore in my project
During my previous four years of study (including my foundation year) I feel I have developed both my academic and practical skills exponentially, I believe I still have a lot to learn; fo far I have developed and dye for graphics, particulary the balance of space, image and type. The use and manipulation of colour in different contexts also fascinates me, as does the relationship with white as a background and as a blank space.
I would like to develop the design and use of type through use of more abstract areas such as Dadaism, particularly with the ideas of collage, and the recreation and restructuring of 'waste'.
I will also introduce into my project work Suprematism (particularly the geometrical and the abstract) as well as the influence of the Bauhaus movement. My project will collate together the above influences, as well as the basics of typography with a surrealistic form which allows freedom of self expression and the work as an abstract message, which gives room for the interpretation and judgement of the viewer.
I will be progressing my knowledge of typography for a more extensive and deeper understanding of the subject as a code in different societies with different political issues attached. I will particularly need to research how each society manipulates these codes for better communication (semiotics and understanding).
My research for this project will require the study of both primart and secondary sources and I would hope to take a minimum of three of four diverse societies on which to base my study.
Research will be undertaken through major London and European museums as well as from interviewing people from different nations. Other historical sources will be researched.
The kind of work I intend to procuce for my project
In order to achieve a conception of the purpose of all of the above related to areas of graphic communication I will utilise my interests in the fine arts and typography to produce either a 'book' or a series of prints which will allow the viewer to respond positively to the idea of typography as art as well as communication. I will bring fine art and typography together without ignoring the different possibilities and styles.
For myself (as opposed to the viewer) I hope to gain a better understanding of the language of graphics in relation to the message, the interpretation, the manipulation and the word play. The finished work will be an expression type as connotation and denotation as well a meaningful image. The final pieces will reflect typography as a universal form of influence and aesthetic singularity in different societies and present and present it in a new and provocative context.
